What Is Diamond Fluorescence?

Some diamonds glow under ultraviolet light. Usually blue. Occasionally orange or yellow.

This characteristic glow is known as diamond fluorescence. This glow appears when trace elements or structural characteristics of some diamonds react to UV light and reflect it as visible colour. Sunlight has UV in it. So do some indoor lights. Which means fluorescence isn't purely a laboratory thing. It can show up in the afternoon light or under the lights of a grocery store.
