Sher-Gil’s choice to pursue art professionally was, in itself, a bold statement that defied gender conventions. She left India to study in Europe—first at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris—in a deliberate step towards honing her craft and expanding her artistic vision. While she studied Western techniques, she remained firmly committed to portraying the essence of Indian culture. In Three Girls, Sher-Gil depicts the raw emotions of her subjects, capturing not just their likeness, but their strength, struggles, and stories. This marked a significant departure from the idealized depictions of women in traditional art forms, reflecting Sher-Gil’s own rejection of the societal norms that tried to define her. Similarly, her Self-Portrait (1931) displays a level of introspection that was uncharacteristic of the time, revealing a confident woman gazing back at herself, asserting her right to define her own identity.
